About Black Lives Matter (BLM)

Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 in the United States by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi as a Black-centered political movement in response to Trayvon Martin’s murder.

BLM is a movement supporting non-violent protests against police brutality and racial violence towards black people. However the Black Lives Matter Foundation Inc. is a global organization in the US, UK and Canada which has the goal to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to help prevent the violence towards the Black community.

In 2020 the movement gained more international attention during the global George Floyd protests after George Floyd’s killing by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. It is estimated that 15 to 16 million people (not all members of the organization) participated in these protests in the US and all over the world, making Black Lives Matter one of the largest movements in the history of the United States.

The organization itself is trying to combat and counter acts of violence, create space for Black imagination and innovation and center Black joy. Their network centers those who have been marginalized within Black liberation movements. They affirm the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, undocumented folks, folks with records, women, and all Black lives along the gender spectrum.
