Uber Technologies Inc. was founded in 2009 by Garrett Camp, a computer programmer and the co-founder of StumbleUpon and Travis Kalanick. It is currently headquartered in San Francisco, California, U.S.

The company Uber offers vehicles for hire, food delivery, package delivery, couriers, freight transportation, and, through a partnership with Lime, electric bicycle and motorized scooter rental.

It is one of the companies that emerged over the past decade and became the highest valued private startup company in the world since its founding. It is estimated to have over 110 million monthly active users worldwide.

The way Uber works is that it determines the terms on which independent drivers are allocated to customers and the prices that will be charged to them, including the share earned by the driver. The service is generally accessed via mobile app where the users set up a personal profile with information and payment preference. The upfront prices are based on the estimated length and duration of the trip.

Also there is the Uber Copter service which offers 8-minute helicopter flights between Manhattan and John F. Kennedy International Airport for approximately $200 per passenger.
