WhatsApp was launched in January 2009 by Jan Koum and Brian Acton. It is now owned by Facebook and it is headquartered in Mountain View, California, United States.

WhatsApp is an American text and voice messaging app that allows for messages and calls on both desktop and mobile devices. The service requires users to provide a standard cellular mobile number for registering with the service.

The app has become the primary means of electronic communication in multiple countries and locations, including Latin America, the Indian subcontinent, and large parts of Europe and Africa and has over 2 billion users worldwide as of February 2020.

The users of WhatsApp get to explore a lot of features like: group chats with their contacts so they can easily stay in touch with their friends or family; they can also send and receive WhatsApp messages right from their computer's browser; they’re always logged in so they don't miss messages; their address book is used to quickly and easily connect them with their contacts who have WhatsApp; share their location, exchange contacts, set custom wallpapers and notification sounds, broadcast messages to multiple contacts at once.

In January 2020, WhatsApp registered over 5 billion installs on Google Play Store making it only the second non-Google app to achieve this milestone.
